Diapers and Diamonds looks forward to fall by looking back at summer.
The start of a new school year is around the corner, and I am in serious denial. Not only am I not ready to pull out my curriculum maps and travel coffee mug, but I’m not quite ready to pull my plum and orange jewel tones from my closet. I don’t want to give up on carefree summer nights, just as I don’t want to give up my breezy summer fabrics.
There’s this unspoken tension that occurs each year from mid-August to mid-September. I call it Augtember. It’s when the schools start opening their doors, but the Chicago beaches haven’t lost their allure. It’s when the patio furniture is 70% off, and the school supplies are back on the front shelves. It’s Back to School season. “Back to School” pretty much embodies fall and evokes thoughts of cool weather, new beginnings, and pumpkin spice lattes. But summer is still reaching out to us, beckoning us back into the fold with late sunsets, humid temperatures, and lake breezes. The school calendar may be pushing me forward towards fall, but let me tell you, I am kicking and screaming the whole way. It’s not 60 degrees yet, my tomatoes haven’t finished ripening on the vine, and Starbucks is still advertising Frappuccino, so IT’S NOT FALL YET.
So Augtember and I are striking a compromise. I don’t have to give up my favorite summer looks yet, as long as I top them with a garment from the fall closet trifecta: blazers, cardigans, and chambray. I’m “Back to School” on top and summer vacation underneath. Hopefully this will ease me gently into the months of grading, time change, and pumpkin patch Facebook photos ahead.
Other blazers I’m loving:
Other cardigans I’m coveting:
Other chambray options I don’t need to buy, but probably will, because you can’t have too many:
