5 Holiday Outfits

Now that the kids are off school and parents are using up their vacation time, the calendar starts to get packed with different parties and events for two straight weeks.  It can be really overwhelming to come up with outfits that are stylish, comfortable, and inexpensive.  Let’s face it, most of the fall and winter paychecks get blown on Christmas gifts, so that leaves little left over to add new outfits to a mom’s closet.  And trying to find a garment appropriate for an adult party in your current closet that either isn’t covered in snot, still fits, or is still in style can turn any mama into a bit of a Grinch.

But don’t fret–Diapers & Diamonds has you covered!  We’ve come up with five different potential events you may get invited to in the coming weeks with outfits for each.  The great news?  Many of the pieces you may already have in your closet, so you may just need one new item to freshen up looks you already own.  Also, every item we’ve linked based on our outfit-spiration boards is less than $50!

Event 1: The Office Holiday Party

Metallic pleated midi skirts are everywhere this season!  If you’re nervous about being glam-tabulous, pair it with your fave fitted black top to keep things simple.

Event 2: The Outdoor Snow Day

Chicago is filled with outdoor events for the family.  Between the Christkindlmarket, Zoo Lights, Polar Express, and Maggie Daley ice skating ribbon, there are plenty of kid-friendly activities that will require warm cozies.  Go with the outerwear you already own, but change things up a bit on the layering front with a plaid wrap coat.

Event 3: Mom’s Night Out

Your mom friends whom you haven’t seen since July 4th are all coming out of the sleep-training hazes to get some much-needed grown up time over drinks and dinner.  Mix casual and structured with your go-to distressed boyfriend jeans and blazer.  To mix things up a bit, invest in a hot new pair of heels.  You’ll draw attention to your adorable footsies without anyone knowing that you haven’t had a pedicure in six months.

Event 4: Family Dinner

You may be required to attend more than one of these.  The trick here is to look put-together, but to still be comfortable enough to bend, scoop, and chase after your kids.  I’m a huge fan of the turtleneck dress, and this event is no exception.  Seriously, do yourself a favor and invest in one of these!

Event 5: Friendsmas Dinner

The holiday parties of our 20’s happened in dark bars with low lighting and loud music.  But the holiday parties of our 30’s  involve decorated houses, appetizers, potlucks, and signature cocktails.  I love nothing more than the coziness of an evening in with the other 30-something couples in my life to vent about parenting and reminisce over the drunken days of years gone by.  Call me old, but at this age, I just want to be able to hear the people I’m conversing with, put my winter coat in someone’s bedroom, sit in a comfortable chair, and have my hands free to eat some cheese and drink some wine.  For an event like this, comfort is key (hence the jeans and sweater).  But to sass things up a bit and feel like you’re really having an evening out, opt for a cold shoulder.  You don’t have to wait in any line outside some club, so your shoulders will be fine.
